Middle School Academy (Grades 6-8)
This is a one-day per week, 4.5-hour drop-off program for students that runs from 9:30 am – 2:00 pm. The parent is NOT required to stay on campus during this time. All teachers have had a background check completed. We cover a variety of subjects that change each quarter/semester. Classes are 45 mins long with 30 min breaks in between. They eat a home-packed nut-free lunch. We run this program on Wednesdays or Fridays. You choose the day that works best for you. Students are dropped off in our kiss-and-ride line and picked up at the end of the day in the same manner. Caregivers never need to leave their car!
- Literature – Christy Thomas
- Welcome to a dynamic book club, Bibliophile Brigade, tailored for middle schoolers. The eagerly anticipated book titles for the upcoming year will be revealed in July. Your child is asked to read around 30-60 pages weekly throughout the year. The reading level of the text is geared towards seventh-grade readability and topics, with audiobook options available for almost all selections. Classes are filled with discussions and hands-on activities that bring stories to life in exciting ways, from dissecting plot twists to chasing down curious facts. Middle School Academy students are expected to write (note-taking and free write) and draw during this class.
- An Elephant in the Garden: Inspired by a True Story by Michael Morpurgo. Lizzie and Karl’s mother is a zoo keeper; the family has become attached to an orphaned elephant named Marlene, who will be destroyed as a precautionary measure so she and the other animals don’t run wild should the zoo be hit by bombs. The family persuades the zoo director to let Marlene stay in their garden instead. When the city is bombed, the family flees with thousands of others, but how can they walk the same route when they have an elephant in tow, and keep themselves safe? ISBN-13 978-1250034144
- Maizy Chen’s Last Chance by Lisa Yee. Maizy has never been to Last Chance, Minnesota . . . until now. Her mom’s plan is just to stay for a couple weeks, until her grandfather gets better. But plans change, and as Maizy spends more time in Last Chance (where she and her family are the only Asian Americans) and at the Golden Palace—the restaurant that’s been in her family for generations—she makes some discoveries. Working together to build confidence, self-expression, and more! During our introductory course, students will explore the elements of improv by learning the core fundamentals and principles of improv, with a focus on various games and exercises that encourage trust, communication, agreement (“yes and”); active listening, character, status, and making your scene partner look like a genius.
